Sophomore golfer rises to the top
After sophomore Maddie McCrary picked up a club for the first time at the age of 5, she never looked back. According to the Dallas Morning News, McCrary made the list for the top 10 golfers in the state making the 2012 4-A Texas All-State team. McCrary has captivated golfers across the state during her remarkable climb to the top of the women’s varsity golf world.
McCrary has been a member of the NTPGA since she was 6 years old. McCrary has participated in Kid Swing for the past four to five years, benefiting Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. According to highschoolgolfscoreboard.com, McCrary has several tournaments in the NTPGA placing third in the Kathy Whitworth Championship. McCrary placed first in the Dallas City Junior Championship in July of 2010.
McCrary’s success carried over on varsity at the high school level. She carded a 69 at the 2011 WaterView golf course, setting a new record. McCrary came in 17th at the Starburst Junior Golf Tournament. She was also one of two freshmen in the top ten medalists at regions.
“I have never watched an individual play golf like she does,” Head Girls Golf Coach Melinda Black said. “She exhibits extraordinary talent and I have enjoyed coaching her this school year.”
McCrary’s impressive resume includes: First Team All District 10-4A, First Team All Region 2 and All State Team High School Score Board 4A.
She has won seven tournaments in both high school and outside of high school since September. She also placed in the top tier in numerous other tournaments.
“Maddie is single handedly putting Wylie East on the map for golf,” her swing coach, Rick Woodson, said.
McCrary wants to continue her golf career and play at the collegiate level. While playing golf in college, McCrary plans to pursue a degree in fitness or a health related field. She also has hopes of someday securing a spot in the LPGA. With all the success she has had, McCrary has begun to receive national recognition.
“She is already being heavily recruited at the NCAA D1 level, I emphasize heavily,” Woodson said.
