Wylie East and Rockwall-Heath will battle Friday for sole possession of second place in District 10-4A. Each has guaranteed itself a spot in the playoffs, regardless of the outcome.
UndefeatedHighland Park, which will finish atop the district standings, dealt both teams (8-1, 5-1) their only loss of the season.
Fresh off a dominating victory over winlessMcKinney, 59-27, Wylie East is led by junior running back Jabari Anderson, who rushed 13 times for 257 yards and four touchdowns last week. Through nine games this season,Andersonhas found the end zone 26 times.
“Anderson is a one-man wrecking crew,” said Wylie East linebacker Brad Oliver.
Running back Kevon Mack also has 775 yards and seven touchdowns, and quarterback Garret McCain has thrown 19 touchdowns against only two interceptions.
The team’s leading receiver, Marcell Ateman, has added 921 yards and eight touchdown receptions.
The Raiders defense has shown improvement with each game this season, led by Chase Eckles and Tre Eggins. Wylie East has outscored its opponents 164-48 over that stretch.
Rockwall-Heath is coming off a near upset ofHighland Park, 31-30, and will look to disrupt the Raiders’ rhythm on offense.JordanPointsand Jay Arnold have 9.5 and 11 sacks, respectively.
But the Hawks have struggled to stop the run, allowing 194 rushing yards per game.
Offensively, Rockwall-Heath star wideout Amaris Fields has 755 yards to go with nine touchdowns. The Hawks feature three versatile backs with more than 300 or more rushing yards.
Anderson, who has had a breakout season, won’t get caught looking ahead to the postseason just yet. He knows what’s at stake this weekend, but he prefers to take the games one at a time.
“I just keep my head focused on the games,” he said.
