Future educators advance to Nationals

In it to win it \\ The Ethical Dilemma team, sophomores Jacqueline Ramirez, Morgan Whitesell, Jordan Meyer and Erin Schuster, advance to Nationals Feb. 20.

As the largest delegation to go to the Texas Association of Future Education State competition in the history of the chapter, 11 TAFE members attended the Teach Tomorrow summit in Arlington, Texas, Feb. 18-20.

The first day, students competed in a variety of individual and team competitions: Bulletin Board, Impromptu Lesson, ELF test, Differentiated Lesson, Ethical Dilemma, Public Speaking, Exploring Support Services and Exploring Administrative Services.

“To me, the most difficult part about the Impromptu Lesson Plan is the limited amount of time you have to plan [20 minutes],” junior Sheridan Williams said.

The following day, members attended breakout sessions over different topics of education at the University of Texas at Arlington campus.

“In one session, we learned about different effective teaching strategies. It was very informative, and I know more for what I’d want to use in my future classroom,” senior Haylie Nicholls said.

That morning and the next afternoon, awards were announced. Eight of the 11 competitors placed or advanced. Senior Lauren Chumbley placed in the top five for Differentiated Lesson Competition, juniors Kate Sheets and Alexys Creighton scored high enough to receive a blue ribbon for their Bulletin Board and sophomores Karaline Klakamp, Jordan Meyer, Erin Schuster, Morgan Whitesell and Jacqueline Ramirez will compete at the national Educators Rising competition in Phoenix, Arizona, over the summer.

Schuster also received an $800 scholarship for her excellence in the Public Speaking competition. Ms. Jessica Taylor is the TAFE sponsor.
