Kuleana, a Hawaiian term, is the value of responsibility, driving self-motivation and self-reliance. Responsibility seeks opportunity.

“Kuleana to me, is doing what is necessary to fulfill your obligations. It’s you,” Assistant Principal Casey Whittle said.

Students and staff from all over the district came together for R and R day to build on relationships and social responsibilities Sept. 4.

“My role was to make sure it got done. It is a part of the Wylie way,” Principal Mike Williams said. “We try to find ways to show students how to be responsible without seeming like we are attacking them.”

Teachers explained experiences in each of their class periods and helped students learn how they could strive to do something big in their lives. The district wants students to be able to accomplish their goals and dreams. Students were able to move around and sort themselves. Teachers asked for volunteers to tell their Kuleana story.

“It was extremely amazing,” sophomore Jordan Peters said. “Kuleana made me realize how important it was to maintain relationships.

Students appreciated the teachers’ passion for the day.

“Some of my teachers were enthusiastic about it as I tried to be,” sophomore Makayla Marley said. “I liked Dr. Vinson’s concept of the day.”
