To dye for

Raider athletes make hair dying playoff tradition

For the second year in a row there have been multiple athletes from various sports teams getting to experience a post-season, and they are celebrating with a little color. Hair color that is.

This hair dying ritual began two years ago when the football team made it to play-offs for the first time in school history. Their playoff spot was guaranteed on a Friday and the following Monday, the Tsunami of Blue became a Tsunami of Blonde.

The team felt it was a school appropriate way to show their unity.

“We had to follow dress code, but we were all in it for each other,” varsity quarterback Garrett McCain said.

Soon after, cheerleaders, Sapphires and fans all alike had joined in on the hair dying craze.

“Dying a streak of our hair blonde, was just another way to show our support to the boys,” varsity cheerleader Karsyn Griffin.

As if making school history wasn’t enough, dying their hair just added to the thrill of it all.

“We were all really excited about making it to playoffs and it made playoffs a lot more exciting than it already was,” Griffin said.

Despite their loss in the first round the hair dying frenzy spread throughout the athletic department.

Last October the Bi-District Champion volleyball team dyed parts of their hair red in celebration of advancing into the post-season for the first time ever.

“We wanted to keep a tradition going, but we had to keep it a natural hair color because of dress code,” volleyball captain Jocelyn Cortes said.

The District Champion girls’ soccer team, now heading into the third round of play-offs, kept the dying a tradition by coloring streaks of their hair blue.

”We chose blue to show pride in our school and our excitement for making play-offs,” senior Kyla Kalinski said.

Although they’re only the third team to do this, Kalinski hopes this ritual isn’t one that “dies” out.

“We’ve done really well so far; maybe it’s good luck,” Kalinski said.

The varsity soccer girls will play Wylie High School this Thursday, April 4, at 8 p.m. at Wylie Stadium. Raiders are the visitors.

Hi! I’m Sara Grosvenor. I’m a senior this year! It’s my first year on the newspaper staff. I’m editor in chief of the yearbook and I would have to say that yearbook is my favorite class of the day! I love sports and I am proud to be part of Raider Nation! I’m an easy going person who knows when to be serious, and my favorite outside of school activity would definitely be photography and singing loudly in my car, even if I’m a little out of tune!
