With paintbrushes, glue and tape, Mrs. Jennifer’s Thompson’s art students decorate the 400 hallway wall with Japanese pop culture.

At a meeting, the students decided they wanted to decorate a wall. With widespread agreement on Japan, the wall was about to be born.

We all decided Japan would be more interesting, because of all the different colors we could use and their traditions. Japan is also a lot different from the U.S.

“We all decided Japan would be more interesting, because of all the different colors we could use and their traditions. Japan is also a lot different from the U.S.,” senior Nika Luu said.

They didn’t only pick Japanese because of its difference from the U.S.

“We chose to decorate the wall like this because of Japanese artworks, inventions and creations,” Luu said.

The art students all share a love for Japan and art.

“We all know Japan very well. We chose to have cherry blossoms and sushi on the wall since its features of Japan.” junior WenQing Liu said.

A big part of the wall is two quotes: “No more Mr. Rice guy” and “We are on a roll.” The class agrees that true Japan-lovers will know exactly what it means.

“The quotes on the wall don’t have a deeper meaning. Sushi is made with rice, and we say on a roll because to make sushi, you roll it.” Luu said.

The wall has several Japanese features on it: a tree with cherry blossoms, quotes, sushi, and buildings. But it has another figure on it: Godzilla.

“I painted Godzilla because I thought it would be a good touch to the wall. Godzilla is from a movie, where it destroys Japan,” senior Peter Ihaka said.
