Everybody has seen the construction taking place all over campus and despite the congestion that it has caused, there are several renovations that will benefit the under classmen and even some for the senior class, that are well worth the hassle.
Next year there will be a new band hall, career tech facilities, gym, field house, some special additions to the cafeteria and the current band hall will be renovated and turned into a black box theatre. Also, the construction on Brown Street is planned to be finished during the summer.
Part of the construction that all students can benefit from is the updates to the cafeteria. According to Mr. Ted Stephens Team Leaders Agenda, the construction crew has “hit a snag” and the renovations to the cafeteria have been delayed, but they will be completed by the time school starts next year. Additions to the cafeteria include a Subway line, salad and soup line, and Italian food line.
The construction of the brand new band hall, which is taking place on the west side of the auditorium, is on track and will be completed in time for the 2013-2014 school year. Mikayla Morales, a band student of Mr. Lambert’s, can see that he is especially excited about the renovations.
“He usually spends his free time watching the construction crew build the new band hall,” Morales said.
Mr. Lambert does not even take his eye off of the band hall to eat lunch.
“I’ve even seen him set his lunch up in the window sill and he’ll watch the workers build while he eats lunch,” Morales said.
The career tech facilities, which are being built on the east side of the auditorium parking lot, will also be ready in time for the 2013-2014 school year.
The gyms and new field house are on track for their completion date of June 1, 2013.
Other updates on construction include a new parking lot which opens after Spring Break and construction will be moving inside into the 900 hall to complete the partially constructed classrooms that will benefit many teachers whose classroom is on wheels. By the start of the 2013-2014 school year every teacher should have classroom to call their very own.
Coach Phelps, one of the many “floaters” on campus is looking forward to the completion of construction. Phelps has three Biology classes, which are held in three different classrooms. He moves from room 855 to 834 to 858. Phelps also has two athletic periods during the day.
“Not floating would make my job 10 times easier because I could stay organized in one place,” Phelps said.
Aside from not having one place to teach, he also doesn’t have a classroom during his conference period to sit down and grade papers. The completion of the classroom construction will eliminate some of these challenges for Phelps and he can have a classroom all his own.
