It was the last hole for the day. All day Head Golf Coach, Melinda Black, struggled with her driver. She lined up on the last hole which was a par 3 in hopes of just getting the ball on the green. Little did she know what was about to happen. She hit the ball making a clean hole in one.

“It was beyond exciting,” Coach Black said. “I had come close other times so I was doubting that it was actually in the hole.”

Wylie High Golf Coach and former protégé of Coach Black’s, Sarah Balthrop, was there to celebrate Sept. 28 at the scramble tournament at Duck Creek in Garland.

“I immediately ran to the tee box to hug her once I saw that orange ball drop in,” Coach Balthrop said.

Coach Black and Coach Balthrop have played golf together many times; and Coach Black actually helped Coach Balthrop with her early golf game. Coach Black was able to celebrate with her Lady Raiders and a few Lady Pirates.

“I was so excited! Proud! And Thrilled!” Coach Black said.

Though the team did not place, they still had a fun time, even with less than ideal conditions all day.

“It was a great end to the day. It was a rainy, but fun experience,” Coach Black said.

This was the first hole in one Coach Black has ever hit.

“She’s a great golfer and she plays a ton,” Coach Balthrop said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets a few more under her belt.”
