Boys Baseball: Aiming for Austin as a family

Boys Baseball: Aiming for Austin as a family

The varsity boy’s baseball team has truly made school history this season. With a district record of 8-1 and an overall record at an impressive 19-3, the baseball team represented the school in a brand new territory: playoffs.

Never before have the Raiders clinched a spot in playoffs but with the triple threat of Bryar Barnes, Garrett McCain, and Jesse Brubaker, it’s no wonder how they got there.

Both Barnes and McCain are among the top five pitchers in DFW and Brubaker is one of the top 10 hitters in the metroplex.

The team was ranked #2 in 4A in DFW and #7 in 4A in the state before playoffs and the team knows they have a lot to fight for this time around. `

Excited to be making it to playoffs, McCain refuses to let opposition get to his head.

“Being in playoffs for the first time is exciting, but it’s also humbling,” McCain said. “We’re a new school and we’re new in this phase of the competition. We could easily use that as an excuse, but instead we’re going to use that as motivation.”

While the energy among the boys is at its peak, they know they have a lot of work ahead of them before they can think about that bus ride to Austin.

“We need to work on our fundamentals,” Barnes said. “And through all of this, we need to make sure we stay strong as a whole.”

The team knows that baseball is more mental than it is physical, so the players need to maintain their focus despite the pressure they’re facing in this new territory.

Looking back, they contribute their success so far to something far greater than hitting averages or the team’s record.

“We’ve made it this far because we’ve come together as a team and we’ve managed to stay unified throughout the season,” McCain said. “Everyone knows the best teams are the best families.”

Come support the team as they make history in their first ever playoff game Thursday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wylie East fields.
