WISD prohibited from selling Dr. Pepper products
Have you ever walked up to a concession stand asking for Dr. Pepper but were offered a Mr. Pibb?
Dr. Pepper or Coca-Cola? There’s no choice here, the Wylie Independent School District has an agreement with Coca-Cola stating that Dr. Pepper products are not allowed to sell within the district. When the agreement was made, the district complied to not sell Dr. Pepper products.
“The WISD has an exclusive agreement with Coca Cola which means that only Coca Cola products may be sold within the district,” Executive Director of Athletics Kyle Craighead said.
Monies for the IMPAC Building at Wylie High School were actually donated through the last contract for beverage services. The contract was in effect for 10 years and expired in August 2013. As part of the agreement, Coca-Cola donated funds specifically for this purpose.
Since Dr Pepper is a Coca-Cola competitor, the district is not allowed to sell, dispense or serve their products.
“I think that they should be able to sell any drink product here. It shouldn’t just be Coca-Cola,” freshmen Breya Garrett said.
The district received offers from Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper and Pepsi-co. Coca-Cola provided the best offer, and was awarded the contract. Sponsorship dollars will go toward a new scoreboard at Wylie ISD Stadium. This project is scheduled to complete by June 2014.
“I like that we can only have Coca-Cola products because I love the drinks they sell,” junior Sean Johnson said.
