Junior Halie Daniel won first place in the 9&10-5A Area track meet in the shot put division, making her the overall champion.

Last year, Daniel placed fifth at the Regional meet. This year she is tied for the number one spot going into the meet. She is looking to be one of the top two to go to State.

“Halie has been very consistent all year in this event,” Head Track Coach Jason Alford said, “Coach Crutcher has done an outstanding job getting her ready to go.”

They will make it to the finals at Regionals and will have a legit shot at going to State as well.

The four other girls who qualified for regionals in the 4×400 Relays are Laterrica Thomas, Katyleen Crew, Madison Dorethy and Amira Coleman.

The girls broke the school record at the Texas Relays, broke their own record last week at District and broke the record once again at Area.

Distance runner Theresa Simmons qualified for Regionals in the 1600m run.  Simmons placed fourth at the Area Track Meet April 23 and is sitting in the fourth spot going into the Region II-5A meet.

“Theresa has been a competitor all year in the 3200/1600m,” Olford said. “She has a very strong work ethic.  Reminds me of a good one who graduated last year and is now running at OU, Sarah Scott.  Theresa is just a Sophomore and has a very bright future ahead of her.”

“It’s been very exciting to watch them compete,” Olford said, “They will make it to the finals at Regionals and will have a legit shot at going to State as well.”

The track team has had multiple successes this season and hopes to continue their success further at the Regional meet May 1-2 and into next season.

“I am very proud of our team this year.  We graduated a lot of athletes last year, and we had 18 kids who advanced to the Area Track Meet and competed well,” Olford said, “We are returning every kid that made it to the Area Track Meet, with the exception of senior Amira Coleman.”
