Athletic trainers go to every game and every sporting event that the school holds. The athletic trainers are the ones who make sure the athletes have water and make sure that if a player gets a minor injury that the player is able to get back in the game. The trainers also handle major injuries until paramedics can get to the injured.
One way that they help is by immobilizing the player if they have a neck or injury. The athletic trainers practiced doing this during class Monday, Dec 3.
“We practiced what we would do if there was an injury to a player on the field,” freshman Brock Melton said.
They took six students, one would be the injured person, three to help keep the person still while another stabilized the athlete’s neck in the brace. The last person would slide the board under the injured, so he/she could be moved without the injury worsening.
“We immobilize the athlete so if they try to move they can’t pull or twist something else that would make the pain worse,” Gumpert said.
