Of the sixteen and a half million World War II veterans, only two million are still alive today. One of the two million still living will get the chance to visit their memorial because of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. The Honor Flight of Fort Worth is a nonprofit organization that honors those veterans by sending them to visit the National World War II Memorial.
The ROTC program is raising money to sponsor a veteran to go to the memorial through this program. The cost to send a veteran is approximately $1,200. ROTC has a goal to sponsor at least one veteran.
“On April 1, The Honor Flight of Fort Worth will be sending veterans to the memorial,” AFJROTC Instructor Wayne Wilbanks said. “So far we have raised about $700.”
In addition to internal fundraisers that have taken place, ROTC will sell wrist bracelets to students for $1 March 6-7 in order to wear jeans, March 8.
These veterans have been waiting over 60 years for the memorial to be built, unfortunately most of the remaining will never get to see it.
“I feel what we are doing is great,” Junior Jarred Davis said, “because the men and women who served should get the respect they deserve.”
The mission of The Honor Flight of Fort Worth is to honor as many of these remaining selfless ordinary people who saved the world with an all-expense paid, escorted trip to visit their memorials.
