Books are so heavy! Why not take a load off with an electronic book? What is this newfangled technology?
In recent years the e-book industry has grown exponentially and now Wylie ISD is working on allowing students to check out e-books directly onto the students’ e-device.
“There have been some changes in the technology department, so once those are ironed out [you should be able to get e-books],” Librarian Vikki Townsend said.
Currently students can only read books on school computers. Eventually, from any device a student can sign in, go to the library catalog, on the drop down menu select e book, and hit enter to see all of the books available.
From there, the student, on school computers, can check out any of those books using their ID number and password. As of Sept. 25 there were 254 e-books available for checkout. Availability ranges from classics like Peter Pan and The Secret Garden to more modern stories like The Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games.
This is a district-wide transition. Students can currently go and check out books online but the technology to actually get it on the device is still in the works.
“The goal is to get it up by Christmas, or start of second semester at the latest,” Townsend said. “So, we’re getting there.”
