Growing up in a small town, there was not much to do as a child. Superintendent Dr. David Vinson grew up in Dalhart, Texas, 80 miles northeast of Amarillo. As a child, Vinson enjoyed playing football and riding bikes around town with friends. Those were basically the only two things to do in this town of about 3500 people.
Living in a small town, employment was hard to come by in Dalhart, but Vinson found a job working with the Texas Department of Transportation, mowing the lawns along the highways.
“I became really great at backing up a tractor,” Vinson said.
Vinson has always loved school; his first memory of school was his first day in Kindergarten.
“I remember sitting down in that first desk and thinking how great it was that I was in school,” Vinson said.
As a teenager Vinson went to Dalhart High School, played football, ran track and became Student Council President. He was also a very active member of his church youth group.
Usually people decide what they want to be at a young age and then end up changing their mind, that did not happen for Vinson. He loved school from the beginning and loved helping other people find success and now he is the Superintendent of Wylie ISD.
Vinson married his wife on July 10, 1993, in Lubbock, Texas, where both he and his wife went to college. Vinson has two children: Cal and Kate.
Vinson believes that people should always live life to its fullest.
“Wishing you were in the past or in the future is wasteful – love where you are and do something great!” Vinson said.
