The glee of Prestige

The glee of Prestige

From singing in the shower to grooving on the stage, the members of Wylie East’s Prestige are under a spotlight every time they carry a tune. Being in this show choir comes with much more pizzazz, pop and dedication than the regular school choir classes.

The pressure intensifies with many singled-out performances in this group that puts the singers in a more uncomfortable position than the students are used to.

“We get to sing more solos in Prestige which we usually don’t get to do in regular choir class,” choir president Kaitlyn Johnson said. “We get to dance and goof off too.”

Prestige takes more than just dedication. Getting into the group takes a lot of work and effort.

“To be in Prestige, a student must be in the Acapella choir class and audition with a solo pop music piece,” choir teacher Sharron Nelms said. “Prestige is an extension of the choir program that requires skill and talent.”

Prestige hasn’t always been around. It started in the 2010-2011 school year beginning with auditions in Spring the previous school year.

“Most choir programs have some kind of show group so we held auditions in May and took it from there,” Nelms said, “the name came from our motto.”

Being in Prestige is a privilege and holds special meaning to its members. The status as a member brings recognition to the students as talented vocalists and musicians.

“Being in Prestige means being a leader in the choir department proving that we can be serious and have fun at the same time,” Johnson said.

Prestige is only beginning and will continue to grow with new students each year singing and dancing to hit pop songs in preparation to compete. The group is working at making an impression everywhere they go outside of Wylie East. Until then, the group will continue singing and having fun.

“We’re the top dogs,” junior Jake Burnell said.
