Cafeteria does not ‘meat’ vegan standards

The school’s lunch menu consists of cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, cheese sticks, pizzas and more, but I’ll give you the main dish—there are vegans at this school.

A vegan is one who cannot eat meat or animal byproducts, including American favorites such as cheese and milk. The food and nutrition program is not concerned with the fact that there are students who choose this lifestyle and cannot eat any of the school’s entrees and a majority of snacks that are provided in the lunch line.

When browsing the shelves in the cafeteria a majority of what is served are things a vegan cannot eat, with the exception of not-so-fresh fruit and pretzels.

Although vegan options can be more costly, the cost is nothing in comparison to the price paid for a hungry student. A study conducted by No Kid Hungry shows that students who eat lunch are more likely to focus in school.

The truth is, the healthier options are often vegan foods with soy and vegetables to replace the fatty options provided in other foods. If the cafeteria served even one vegan lunch choice, it may lead to fewer hungry students and more focused students.

More young people are becoming vegan and the school district does not meat the needs of all. Vegans unite. Make your voices and grumbling stomachs be heard and take a bite out of the lack of vegan options here at school.
