College Club started as any other club to be involved with school but over the years it has become a class that students can take to prepare for college, including SATs, ACTs, find careers and apply to colleges senior year.

The inspiration behind College Club was a program called AVID which provides strategies and curriculum to elementary middle and high school. This program develops of hope and achievement through hard work in critical thinking, literacy and math skills which prepare students for college and success in high school as well.

“My previous school had AVID. I like the idea and the opportunities it presented so I talked to Mr. William and he had the idea to start College club,“ College Club Sponsor Mrs. Emily Whittle said.

The organization also prepares students for Advanced Placement classes, testing skills and teaches them how to be more organized in school.

“I hope they [students] gain confidence in taking Advanced classes. A lot of kids don’t get the opportunity and I think it can make a huge difference,” College Club sponsor Jennifer price said.

Students have to meet qualifications to take the class

“In order to join you have to go through an interview and meet with the counselors. About your current situation,” sophomore Stephanie Ung said.

Students in College Club go on field trips during the school year to different universities in Texas to explore colleges that might interest them and their careers. These outings allow them to narrow down their college options for the future.

“The club has allowed me to get to learn the different options I have and meet people with my same interests for college. I haven’t yet [narrowed options] but I look forward to and I think with the College Club that will happen,” sophomore Haylie Hadjiev said.

They also help with the elementary schools in the morning opening doors for kids to get them familiar with colleges every second and fourth thursday of each month. To raise money for future trips, College Club is offering babysitting for a Valentine Parents Night Out Feb. 10 from 5-9 p.m. To sign up click here>> https://docs.google.com/a/apps.wylieisd.net/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf5Htsc-24Rm8sIX0nZxlXh33JnIN4ptAoN_ZjVvGsiN2_c4Q/viewform?c=0&w=1
