The bells sounded May 2 in the culinary and nutrition and wellness classes. The race had begun.

From May 2-8 participants were expected to produce creative recipe ideas for cupcakes which would be executed with finesse.

The decision was made as to who would bake what when students voted on the most interesting ideas May 9.

Then the real action began.

Round One: Participants competed against the teams of the same class period. The Culinary Arts students created a timeline recording their mistakes, successes and overall progress, including how their test trial of 12 cupcakes turned out. Meanwhile, nutrition and wellness classes evaluated their cupcake creations based on their nutrition facts.

Round Two: Each team presents their cupcakes to judges to be taste-tested. The winner of each class moves on to the next and final round.

Final Round: The final cupcakes were then judged and ranked by various judges.

The second runner up:

As a result of their effort, the eighth period Thin Mints Cupcake team made up of senior Kira Bockemehl, senior Leticia Barrera, sophomore Jace Diaz, junior Lauren Dukes, sophomore Katharine Salgado and junior Matthew Linebaugh won third place.

First runner up:

Working hard, the seventh period Honey Banana and Cinnamon frosting team made up of junior Greta Williams, junior Tori Knapp, junior Christian Rodriguez and junior Hayden Lajaunie earned second place.

“It was pretty cool. We all did our very best and we worked as a team,” Salgado said. “It was fun to see how far we placed.”

The Grand Champion:

Fourth period lifetime wellness and nutrition class who elected the S’mores flavor, basked in their victory while their names; senior Isabella Maisch, sophomore Danny Pesantes, freshman Brandon Carroll and junior Alex Deleo are engraved on a cutting board which will be hung in Chef Toni Sloane’s culinary arts room.

“I think this experience has shown how rewarding the class has truly been,” Maisch said. “Using all of our learned culinary skills for such a fun activity is great to finish off the year in such a tasteful way!”
