The WEHS Relay for Life team, The Rocky Mountains, surpassed their goal of $5,000 in fundraising. The 54 member team led by junior Cody Howard raised $5167.57 that will go towards cancer research.
The National Honor Society sold coffee donated by Starbucks, which brought in an additional $105.
Students began collecting donations in early spring. All teams participating in the Wylie/Sachse/Murphy area event raised a record amount of $105,000 this year.
Participants began arriving at Shaffer stadium at 4:00 p.m. Friday and walked the track all night until the event came to a close at 7 a.m.
This year’s theme was “The Amazing Race”. Each team was to choose a geographical location to represent. East’s team chose the Rocky Mountains, after the varsity mascot, Rocky. Cancer survivors and their caretakers visited participating team’s tents to have their passports stamped.
At the opening ceremonies, The Rocky Mountains’ team captain Cody Howard was recognized for his outstanding leadership.
