Student draws teachers
As you walk by room 856, you might be prompted to do a double take as you notice the black and white face staring out at you from the classroom window. It is the face of science teacher Mr. Steve Abrams sketched on white portrait paper. Freshman Michelle Luu sketches living subjects, all of which are her high school teachers.
Though Luu has never drawn portraits of people, a class assignment in her art class prompted her to branch out; she never thought she would find a teacher on her page.
Science teacher Steve Abrams is the first of the lot Luu chose to replicate on paper.
“It was Halloween and he has a creepy smile,” Luu said.
After Luu’s portrait of Abrams was graded and returned to her, she gave it to him as a gift. Not only did the drawing score well in class, it also scored some major points with Abrams. He displayed it on the classroom door.
After Luu’s first successful teacher portrait, she decided to continue drawing portraits by creating a shot of Math teacher Pauline Cheng and English teacher Megan Maxwell together.
“I sort of went on a little field trip with [Mrs. Maxwell] and met Ms. Cheng for the first time. Then I decided to take a picture,” Luu said.
The picture Luu took with her camera became a work of art with her charcoal pencil.
Luu intends to continue recreating the faces of her teachers in charcoal art.
