Forget the turkey, it’s Christmas time! All across the country, people are starting a trend- skipping Thanksgiving in favor of full-fledged Christmas.
In years past, the debate has been over when to decorate: before or after Thanksgiving. However this year, it appears as if Americans are ditching the debate and decorating mid-November. Are high school students hopping on the holiday bandwagon though?
“When November first hits, Mariah Carey defrosts,” junior Nathaniel Jacob said. “And when Mariah Carey defrosts, Christmas begins. We pause for Thanksgiving though.”
Junior Charlie Burkart also decided to celebrate early, but isn’t fully on the Christmas train yet.
“I’ve already decorated my house,” Burkart said. “But I haven’t started listening to Christmas music yet.”
In the midst of early holiday cheer, some are still Thanksgiving purists like juniors Delaney Polston and Ryleigh Abrams.
“I usually decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving because I host Thanksgiving and I want to have the Thanksgiving vibe,” Polston said.
Abrams’ patience isn’t by choice, though.
“My mom thinks it’s bad luck to decorate early,” Abrams said. “I’m not able to feel the amazing Christmas spirit and be holly and jolly until after Thanksgiving and it’s so frustrating.”
Even if decorating isn’t an option, many find joy celebrating early with Christmas music and menus. Shops like Starbucks and Swig released Christmas drinks mid-November.
“I started listening to Christmas music in mid-October,” Polston said. “And I got my first
Christmas drink the day they came out at Starbucks. I’m so excited for Christmas!
