Powerlifting is one of the school sport activities that has grown in members ever since it began. There are now 25 active members in power lifting, 11 are varsity players.

The girls competed Jan. 23 in the Princeton Powerlifting meet.

“I’ve won twice in a row now. It felt really good because the first competition I was taken out because I missed all three of my attempts,” varsity senior Marion Wright said.

In powerlifting the athlete has to lift a specific weight in her weight class and has to be able to control lifting up and lowering the weight back down.

Girls have to work twice as hard as the boys because they have testosterone to build their muscle.

“Girls have to work twice as hard as the boys because they have testosterone to build their muscle,” Wright said.

The Princeton powerlifting meet left the team with six placings.

Freshman Alex Villegas placed second in the 97 pound weight class. In weight class 132 senior Kira Bockemehl placed fifth, junior Mac Ortega placed fourth and senior Keely Watson placed third. Junior Lauren Foley placed fifth in the 165 weight class. Senior Marion Wright placed first with an accumulative total of 905 pounds.

The head coach of powerlifting is John Mitchell. The assistant coach is Bill Persinger.

“Mitchell is a very quiet man when it comes to practice but better not cross him when it comes to competition; he will chew your ear off!” Wright said.
