Wrestling team competes at State

Juniors Shane Brown, Aaron Gassett, Zech Peltier and sophomore Aram Amin all wrestled at the state championship tournament at the Curtis Culwell event center in Garland, Texas, Feb. 20-21.

“I was very excited and I felt lucky to be going,” Amin, a sophomore on the Varsity team, said.

Unfortunately, Gassett, Peltier and Amin lost their first matches, making them unable to advance in the tournament.

Shane Brown, however, advanced into the next round on the second day by winning his second match.

“I was really happy when I made it into the second day, but I knew that it was going to be tough.” Shane Brown, a junior on the varsity team, said.

He then fell short at his third match on the second day and was no longer able to advance forward in the tournament.

“When I lost I felt pretty upset and like I had let myself down,” Brown said, “But after I calmed down I was happy that I got this opportunity.”

This season has built the team in many aspects. They have more experience and are ready for next year.

“It showed me I have to prepare myself even more to place at state,” Amin said, “If you want to be a good wrestler, yes you want to be strong, fast, and all that, but if you don’t have the mental focus and determination, you won’t go far.”
