Cross country boys win second; girls place third at district

The Wylie East Cross Country teams competed in the 13-4A District Meet Oct. 24.

The Boys Varsity Team took second place overall, losing by a mere 9 points to Lovejoy.

“Our team was represented quite well,” Coach Joel Zuniga said.

Grant Buley (1st), Edwin Walker (3rd), Jorge Perez (6th), Nije’e Cooper (11th), Wesley Massey (22nd), Gabe Hernandez (25th), and Ashton Rel (39th).

Buley won for the second straight year and was named to the District 13-4A Most Oustanding Runner. Jorge Perez, running in his first season was named the District 13-4A Newcomer of the Year.

The JV Boys finished fifth overall and were led by Andrew Spiegel, Addison Dickens, Dylan Redig and Cameron Nardiello.

The Girls Varsity team took third place overall.

“Sarah Scott bounced back nicely from a 10 day injury lay-off to win the race convincingly,” Zuniga said. “She took second last year and was a very determined runner.”

Scott was named the District 13-4A Most Outstanding Runner.

The girls team is very young, despite their youth, they still managed to qualify for the regional meet.

The JV Girls finished fourth overall and were led by Michelle Luu, Ashton Burnell, Itsela Ochoa and Helena Green.

Both teams will run Nov. 2 at the UIL Region II Meet at Lynn Creek Park next to Joe Pool Lake.
