O Line key to offensive success

Keeping a football quarterback safe during a game is easier said than done.  The linemen protect the quarterback. They have to train differently from all of the other players.

“I’ve been in the weight room every day after school getting stronger,” senior Cameron Pitman said, “During practice I’ve been working really hard to be a pass protector and I’ve gotten better.”

New challenges always arise for linemen.

“Sometimes I’ve got to go against guys that are three times bigger than me,” Pitman said.

Protecting the quarterback is rewarding for these linemen.

“Garrett McCain is my quarterback, I feel good after I protect him and I don’t want him to get hurt,” Pitman said.

“If someone is coming at you full speed you got to stop it,” senior Alex Barbosa said.

Not everybody can be in the position to protect the quarterback.

“It takes a certain kind of athlete,” Barbosa said.

Being a lineman can bring excitement and interesting stories. Senior Anthony LeNoir, who “bleeds blue” recalls one of his memorable moments.

“An exciting play was when the quarterback scrambled, flipped the ball to Jabari and made a touchdown pass,” LeNoir said.

As important as a lineman is to the game, they don’t get as much recognition as those who put points on the scoreboard.

“It is a thankless job but the results are rewarding,” Barbosa said.

Despite a lack of enthusiasm from the student body, the linemen take pride in their job.

“Garret’s my man and I’m not going to let him get hurt,” Pitman said.
