Graduated in 2020, Jazmine Garcia went on to attend the University of North Texas (UNT) after a year of community college. She is currently majoring in communications design with a concentration in graphic design and a minor in art history and advertising. Jazmine works as a designer at UNT and interns at a consulting agency, also freelance illustrating and operating her online shop (@fancyberriesco on Instagram) when she’s less busy.
What activities were you involved in in high school?
I was involved the most in band and newspaper.
What is your favorite high school memory?
I can’t make a choice about this—lots of good memories, but I’ll say I had some good times in the Newspaper room. I remember starting Staffer Of The Month and running around town in a Suburban trying to sell ad space for the magazine. It was all very silly but fun. There’s probably some cringey videos still posted on Instagram somewhere too. I think I was really relaxed in the class.
How have your plans for the future changed since high school?
This is a long winded story for me, but my plans ended up changing a lot. I was supposed to major in Journalism, but I ended up opening an illustration shop and changing my major to design. I didn’t know much about art or design at the time, but it worked out!
What advice would you give your high school self?
The things you think are impossible for you are very possible. Worry less about the future and pray more. You don’t have to try to be someone you aren’t; God knows exactly who you are. And people like to help so don’t let how others perceive you keep you up at night. You got this!
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
10 years?! I’ll be 31, so my career as an illustrator and designer should be well established. By then I would imagine I would slowly transition to freelancing and hopefully be married with kids. No matter what it is, I’m sure my 30’s will be eventful and full of laughter.
What’s next for you?
I graduate in a year! I want to travel a little after graduation. My goal is to land a fun design industry job that’s very flexible and serve whichever community God puts me in. Also I really want to keep my shop open full time and publish/illustrate a children’s book soon after graduation.
Just for the fun of it questions:
Favorite Starbucks drink?
I like getting a matcha latte with 2 pumps of chai, vanilla sweet cold foam and peppermint. Elaborate, I know.
Favorite childhood cartoon?
I loved Phineas and Ferb growing up
Newest hobby?
Not new, but I’ve been playing on my Switch a lot more this year.
Comfort food?
Enchiladas
Favorite animal?
Bambi?!….
Have any collections?
I collect a lot of different publications! So books, physical albums, magazines, children’s books etc. My favorite publications I own: Pride and Prejudice by Alice Pattullo and a storybook version of the Bible illustrated by Don Clark.
