Passion pay off \\ Sophomore Torrance Thedford poses with the photo she took that gained a national award in Jostens 2021 Photo Contest. “I was so excited to win for something I love to do,” Thedford said.

Making school history, sophomore Torrance Thedford’s photo was selected in a premier student photography competition.

Thedford’s photo “Twinkle Toes” won an honorable mention in the “Sports: Sidelines and School Spirit” category of Jostens annual photo contest. Thedford is a yearbook staff member and the varsity football photo manager.

Depicting Sapphire Guards, junior Everett Vasquez and senior Carter Pohlmeier dancing in the stands at a football game, the pair’s joy is captured through Thedford’s lens at the WISD stadium.

I know Everett can have a very goofy light-up-a-room personality, and Carter is bold and built to be a star. They made a good modeling team.

“I know Everett can have a very goofy light-up-a-room personality, and Carter is bold and built to be a star,” Thedford said. “They made a good modeling team.”

For the past several years, journalism students have entered this nation-wide photo contest, but this is the first time a student’s photo from this school was selected.

“It is a fierce competition,” Yearbook Adviser Casi Thedford said. “It’s also pretty cool that my daughter was the first to win for the school. She’s been shooting ever since she could hold a camera.”

Torrance’s photo and the other winners will be featured in the 2022 Jostens Look Book, and on various marketing materials such as sales posters and yearbook online ads.

“I hope this motivates my students to enter more of their photos. We have some really great photographers on the yearbook staff,” Mrs. Thedford said.

“It felt great to finally be able to say I achieved something on my own, and setting school history,” Torrance said.
