The Wylie Chamber of Commerce held the annual Rodeo Sept. 9-10. The National Honor Society, Future Farmers of America and JROTC assisted with putting on the show.

Junior Alexis Sturgeon participated in the barrel racing competition.

“I’ve been riding horses since I was 7 years old, and I began to do rodeos at age 13. I started at an equestrian center, and felt like I should take it up a bit,” Sturgeon said.

Sturgeon was able to place fifth in her competition on Saturday.

The hardest part about it all is controlling and applying what you practiced, but what I love most is the thrill of it and having the spotlight on you.

“The most exciting part is being on the horse and having fun,” Sturgeon said. “Being able to let loose, but having everyone’s eyes on you.”

There were booths strewn across the large grassy area behind the arena selling all types of food.

Freshman Chloe Tanner was at the rodeo as a volunteer, helping with traffic flow, and guiding people to where they needed to be.

“I went on Friday to volunteer with a few friends, and we worked, helping with traffic flow and such, until about 8 p.m., and then we were allowed to go in and watch the events,” Tanner said.

There was a petting zoo for the children, along with live music being played behind the petting zoo to entertain the spectators between events. The barn was also open for people to go inside and view the livestock.

“The hardest part about it all is controlling and applying what you practiced, but what I love most is the thrill of it and having the spotlight on you,” Sturgeon said.
