Honorary feast for honorary students

Every nine weeks Principal Mike Williams hosts an honor’s luncheon where selected students get to meet in the media center and celebrate by having pizza, salad and juice. Selected students get to miss a period depending on their grade level. Once students arrive rewards await them.

Awards are given for academic excellence, academic improvement, “A” honor roll, perfect attendance and for the Wylie Way attitude.

The media center is set up to greet the students with tables laid out with pizza.

After students eat and pick up their award(s) Mr. Williams stands on top of a bookshelf and talks to the students. He then presents Crystal Apple awards to teachers.

“My high school counselor told my parents that I would never be successful in college, so I developed a strong desire to prove my high school counselor wrong,” Williams said.

This second nine weeks luncheon had a slight twist. Some students that went to the first nine weeks luncheon were accidently invited again and some students that were supposed to attend the second nine weeks luncheon did not get an invitation.

“I was excited that I got invited again then when I found out I was upset because I had no award there,” junior Mary-Jane Taylor said.

All was well because students who were re-invited enjoyed the luxuries once again and the students who received the notice a little late received their awards the following day.

The luncheon ended with Williams presenting an inspirational video. The second nine weeks videos were about grit, a concept discussed in January, followed by an inspirational speech about grit from Williams.

“What’s inside of you is what counts. If you develop that grit, if you develop that perseverance, develop that go-get-it attitude then you too can have that opportunity to live out your dreams,” Williams said.
