Publication staffs win state awards

Yearbook and newspaper staffs work year round to create informative and entertaining publications.

When spring time comes, they submit their best work to Interscholastic League Press Conference in attempts to win awards in categories such as layout, designs, headlines, pictures and stories.

“I am so proud of myself for finally achieving something good,” Elizabeth Abrams, editor in chief of the Raider Reader, said. “I am more than excited to have received these awards. I am blessed.”

The staff sends in their best work in February to ILPC and gets results back in April. They compete against schools throughout the state.

“It feels good to be notified because I don’t get noticed a lot,” Yearbook Sports Editor Carley Rogers said.

The Dynasty won awards such as third in General Interest Spread by Cheyenne Archilla, third in academic spread by DJ Brennan and Chase Cairns, and third in sports feature photo by Madison Jennings.

“I hope that the Dynasty staff keeps growing in knowledge and skills,” Rogers said. “I know it will be even better next year.”

The print newspaper, Raider Reader, won awards such as second in headlines by DJ Brennan and Carley Rogers, third in news feature by Caitlyn Bogart, third in entertainment review by Liz Abrams, third in feature page design by Alyssa Garrett, third in double truck design by Kailey Morgan, Chris Vaughan, Najah Hameen, Aarika Novelli, Kaila Gower and Marah Townzen, third in general news photo by Caroline Witty and third in caption writing by Ash Thomas, Liz Abrams, Sara Grosvenor and Brooke Vincent.

“My Staff is the best staff anyone could ever ask for,” Abrams said. “I hope this staff continues to grow and develop into beautiful people that they are becoming.”

Blue Print also won several awards such as first in captions by Brittany Creel, Ash Thomas, Taylor Veracruz and Brooke Vincent, second in headlines by Elizabeth Teitelman, Brooke Vincent, Kyleigh Anderson and Abbey Welsh, second in portrait picture by Makenzie Baker, second in blog by Ash Thomas, second in home page design, third in portrait picture by Kelsey Morris, third on in depth news and feature story by Kamrey Purvis, Jaiden Garcia, Carley Rogers and Kelsey Morris and third in news photo by Makenzie Baker.

“I know that we are only going to grow from here,” Brooke Vincent, Blue Print sports editor said. “I expect more awards next year and there is no reason that goal couldn’t be achieved.”

The staffs also received honorable mentions such as theme development, headlines by Matt Milton, Keana Hinds, Kyleigh Anderson and Sara Grosvenor, academic spread by Chase Cairns and DJ Brennan, class section spread by Ashton Russell and Cassidy Ensley, Club spread by Madison Jennings, sports story by Keana Hinds, feature story Allison Massey, student life photo by Alyssa Garrett, news feature by Taylor Veracruz, feature writing by Brooke Vincent, news photo by Maribeth Mills, feature photo by Camila Garcia, sports action photo by Caroline Witty, sports action photo by Brandy Jones, photo story by Liz Abrams, personal opinion column by Liz Abrams, sports page design by Sara Grosvenor, sports page design by Brooke Vincent and sports action picture by Jessica Blakeley.

“I am super proud of everyone winning these awards,” Rogers said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
