Tanner Smithson was having a bad day when he came into Mrs. Thedford’s classroom and asked if he could join Newspaper.

“I want to write editorials so I can rant about things that are bothering me,” Smithson said.

Due to rules and regulations with schedule change problems and Smithson not being exactly serious he did not join newspaper staff.

The newspaper staff did come to a conclusion and decided that they wanted to do something for Smithson to try to make his day brighter.

Mrs. Thedford created an Honorable Newspaper Staffer medal to present to Smithson.

“I created a paper medal and had it laminated. I think we’ll laminate him some paper cords to wear at graduation,” Thedford said.

During fourth period, the newspaper staff went into Smithson’s classroom and told the class who they were and why they were there which was to honor Smithson. The class was a little confused but Smithson knew exactly what was going on. Smithson got up out of his seat and tech editor, Elizabeth Abrams placed the Honorable Newspaper Staffer medal around his neck. Smithson announced that he wanted a “group hug” and they all surrounded around him.

At this point the newspaper staff knew brightening his day was a success.

“Having the opportunity to give Tanner the HNS medal was an incredible moment for me because I know it put a smile on his face and a happy warmth in his heart,” Abrams said.
