Varsity falls to Red Oak in last four seconds
The first game of the season was played against the Red Oak Hawks Aug. 30. Senior Niko Pierson led the game off with an immediate touchdown.
The hard work continued and the boys earned two more touchdowns scored by sophomore Malik Dean and senior Garret McCain.
“I felt very happy about my touchdown and that will be a moment in football for me to remember,” Dean said.
By the fourth quarter the boys and the Hawks were tied.
“I wanted to work harder and perform better to put my team in a better position to win,” McCain said.
Sophomore Braden Shewmake then scored a field goal putting the team ahead by three points.
“I didn’t even know I made it right when I kicked it, but it was awesome when I found out it went in,” Shewmake said.
With the boys ahead, everyone began celebrating. Red Oak pulled through by scoring a field goal with about four seconds left in the game.
“After we made our field goal I thought we would win. I didn’t think they would be able to put a drive together, McCain said.
With a final score of 23-22, Red Oak got the win.
“Our Wylie Athletes, coaches, and fans revealed great character by not giving up and playing to the very end of the game,” WISD Superintendent Dr. Vinson said.
The team heads to Frisco to play the Frisco Liberty Red Haws on Sept. 6. At 7:30p.m.
