Senior Kevin Saygi has chosen a career in engineering. However, he feels that coming into high school, he was not prepared in deciding what courses he needed to take to get there. To help incoming freshman avoid the problem he faced, Saygi is holding a class for junior high students in Wylie ISD to explore engineering.
“I’m doing this to promote engineering, to guide youngsters to explore intriguing fields, to inform about high school opportunities, and to impact the lives of future community members,” Saygi said. “I want to give other students a head start that I wish I had.”
Saygi is able to hold this class through TPSP, or Texas Performance Standards Project. This class allows students to learn and apply knowledge any way they wish.
“The best way to learn something is to teach it,” said Saygi. “The students will listen to lectures about what engineering is, then they will go to a chosen station.”
These stations include chemical, electrical, mechanical, civil or aerospace- each governed by a professional.
“They will also listen to me lecture about high school courses, summer programs, and other stuff to get them started on a path to engineering,” said Saygi.
The students will also get to maneuver a robot through an obstacle course.
The class is Saturday April 20 at 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Wylie East High School. Enter through the front doors. If you have an questions, email the instructor Kevin Saygi at [email protected] or Mrs. May at [email protected].
“Engineering is like a box of chocolates,” said Saygi. “I will leave you with the suspense in trying to understand how engineering is like a box of chocolates.”
