Purple, orange, royal blue and green will soon replace the navy blue jerseys that were once worn on the backs of the varsity players who helped to establish roots for the East football program.
Jabari Anderson, Marcell Ateman, Jessie Brubaker and Quan Jones committed to their college of choice on National Signing Day, Feb. 6, in the auditorium.
Friends and family gathered to watch the athletes sign their letters of intent to play football at four different universities.
“It feels good to be committed to Tarleton,” Anderson said. “They are a growing school. I feel at home there because when I came to East, we were growing,”
Anderson signed with Tarleton, Ateman with Oklahoma State, Brubaker with Tulsa and Jones committed to Baylor.
“It’s official, I am a Baylor Bear,” Jones said.
Expressing his gratitude, Marcell Ateman tweeted about his big day.
“Today was a great day and a day I won’t forget. Got my brothers alongside of me,” Ateman said.
Joe Lepsis, the varsity football coach, led the signing ceremony.
“When the boys showed up at Wylie East High School, no one knew them, but once they started playing football everyone knew who they were,” Lepsis said.
