Student wins award for leadership conference

On Sept. 25 Caitlin Walker was recognized for her outstanding achievement at the Youth Leadership Conference at Texas A&M University. Caitlin was 1 of the 6 chosen out of 90 students nominated across the state to receive this honor.

“To me, it’s almost unreal. I don’t believe I’ve even grasped the full understanding on what a blessing this truly is,” Walker said.

Walker was nominated to receive this award by her counselor, Brooke Scoggins who believed she was the best candidate.

“Caitlin has an amazing spirit and drive to be successful.  I know the skills and experience she would receive at this conference would be life-changing and help her to become a great leader,” Scoggins said.

Before receiving the award, Walker was interviewed by the sponsor and leaders of the Youth Leadership Conference, who are all veterans of the military.

“While I was being interviewed I had an overwhelming feeling of excitement and being nervous as well.  Through all those overpowering feelings I knew I had to remain confident. Confidence brings out the best in people,” Walker said.

By receiving this award Walker has now been invited back next summer as a counselor for the incoming youth.

“I will be able to show what it takes to be a leader, but more importantly how to remain a great one. I will receive the opportunity to lead the youth leaders to realize their full potential at the conference,” Walker said.

Caitlin Walker has represented her family, Wylie East and the Wylie community very well.

“This is a major turning point for my life, going through this whole experience just shows no matter where you come from and what you’ve had to battle, God is sure to bless your life with great adventures.”

Brooke Vincent, Editor in Chief
I’m Brooke Vincent, fan of Twenty One Pilots, Panic at the Disco and Bear Hands. You can take that as bands or that I just really love multiple pilots, anxiety at parties and paws for hands. Either way I won’t be offended. My life revolves around journalism, I work at The Wylie News and frequent Mrs. Thedford’s class at least four periods a day. I enjoy traveling to faraway places like the Colosseum in Italy and Stingray City in Grand Cayman. This spring break I will be taking a cheesy tourist picture in front of the Eifel Tower and another in front of the London Eye. I have no shame. Hopefully I can be one of the reasons that our staff wins awards and recognitions for top quality reporting and our ability to keep our students informed about not only changes in the school but also what’s happening in the world around us.
