Wylie East will have their first true homecoming now that the alpha class has graduated.

Wylie East is holding their first homecoming Friday, Sept. 28 at Wylie Stadium. They will face the Denison Yellow Jackets. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

During the game’s half time, the Raider Royalty winners will be announced. The top three nominees for the freshman, sophomore and junior classes will walk the field; the top four for seniors.  Each student from each class with the most votes will be crowned prince/princess or king/queen.

“Students voted Friday, Sept. 14, for who they think deserves to win,” Student Council teacher representative Mrs. Angela Arp said.

The senior male with the most nominations will be named homecoming king; runner-up will be named senior prince. The senior female with the most nominations will be named homecoming queen; runner-up will be named senior princess.

Winners are represented at the homecoming dance the following Saturday, Sep. 29, in the commons area at Wylie East. The dance starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. The Wylie East Sapphires are hosting the dance.

“I love getting to set up the dance,” sophomore Sapphire Marison Clayton said. “It’s just one more way I get to show my school spirit.”

The theme for the dance this year is A Night in the Clouds. Students can purchase tickets for $15 during lunch, or $25 at the door.

“It’s a chance for me to dress up and have a good time with my friends,” sophomore Samantha Ragsdale said.

The week of homecoming the entire school shows their spirit in many different ways. Paying tribute to all types of heroes, the week’s theme is True Blue Heroes.

“I love spirit week because we get a chance to wear what we want and support our team in our own way,” junior Caitlin Sumners said.

Monday, Sept. 24:  Military Hero Day (Military Attire)

Tuesday, Sept. 25:  Police/Fire Hero Day (Police/Fire Attire)

Wednesday, Sept. 26:  Sports Hero Day (Jerseys, Sports Attire)

Thursday, Sept. 27:  Super Hero Day (Super Hero Costumes)

Friday, Sept. 28:  True Blue Heroes (Raider Attire)

A tsunami of blue will take over the downtown area for the homecoming parade. Saturday, Sept. 23 at 8 a.m., the Student Council will embellish the strip with Raider pride.

“Decorating downtown is a time old tradition that allows the city of Wylie to embrace a sense of pride with our Raider Nation and see our students thrive with spirit and creativity,” Senior DJ Brennan said.

There will also be a class competition to decorate the halls of Wylie East. Each class will get a different section of the school to adorn with streamers and Raider pride.

“I look forward to watching them spread their pride on the walls at East,” Yearbook Adviser Mrs. Casi Thedford said. “We did this at my old high school, and I am so excited they get the same experience.”

Monday, Sept. 24 launching the festivities at 4:45 p.m., a carnival will take place until 8:45 p.m. Then at 6:30 a parade will travel down Ballard then end at Olde City Park. A pep rally will end Monday’s festivities.

“It gives me great pride to watch my students support their teams and other school organizations,” Assistant Principal Keith Kirkpatrick said. “Last year was a blast being the target for Interacts’ pie throwing contest.”

Everyone come out and support the Raiders of Wylie East High School. The proceeds of the carnival will raise money for scholarships.

“The bigger the turn out, the more scholarships we can offer.” Math Teacher Mrs. Shannon Ainsworth said.
