Big hallways, tall football players and proud seniors: welcome to the life of a new freshman. Fortunately for the underclassmen, the club “Welcome Crew” was created to help them find their way.

Welcome Crew is a group of juniors and seniors who help with events for people new to the school. They mostly help with freshmen on the first day of school.

“I joined because I wanted to help the freshman have a good year,” senior Mackenzie Spence said.

Throughout the day, the different members are placed around the school in areas heavy with traffic. They search out lost students.

“They are all nervous and shy the first day, so you have to be the one to initiate the conversation,” Spence said.

Welcome Crew is three years old and was created by a helpful student and Geography Teacher Ms. Jessica Taylor.

“Students who are interested fill out an application and hand it in to me,” Taylor said. “Then I go through and decide which students are the most qualified for the job. They can’t be involved in too many groups, or have too demanding of a job.”

Most of these students have been Raiders for two or three years, so they understand the fear of entering a new, huge school.

“I was so nervous my first day of my freshman year,” Spence said. “I went to school with my two friends and we started freaking out before we went inside.”

The members have an outgoing personality love their school, and have outstanding pride.

“I liked befriending them so that they would feel a part of the Raider Nation family instantly. I want them to love the school as much as I do,” senior Marissa Edenstrom.

Spence makes sure to give some advice to the class of 2016 while they talk.

“Do you work, respect your teachers, join something, and make sure to have fun,” Spence said
