Two staff members were recognized for Teacher of the Year and Paraprofessional of the Year Jan. 23. Coach Mike Crutcher and Mrs. Marcie Pickard were nominated for these positions by their coworkers.

“Coach Crutcher has a unique, methodical approach to teaching and can connect the content of his course to the students’ lives,” Assistant Principal Angela Arp said. “These connections make the learning relevant and meaningful for each student, as they can see it applied in real-world situations. Coach also has the ability to build strong relationships with each of his students, and students look forward to his class.”

He brilliantly teaches students about life through history. He is the epitome of Wylie Magic.

These awards are presented by the superintendent and board of trustees, along with the administration—this year they brought the drumline for some extra spirit. It’s tradition to keep the winners a secret until the day they are announced.

“I was shocked and really surprised,” Pickard said.

Everyone gathered down in the IMPAC building to surprise Crutcher with this honorable title as ‘Teacher of the Year’.  He was surrounded by all of this players and other coaches.

“The lifelong lessons taught in his class will stay with students far beyond the curriculum alone. He brilliantly teaches students about life through history.  He is the epitome of Wylie Magic,” Arp said.

He has taught for 44 years and it shows that he knows what he is doing. Not only does he teach but he also coaches varsity football and track and field.

“I have learned more in coach Crutcher’s class than any other history class,” sophomore Chelsea Hulla said.
