Wylie East’s Honor Luncheon

The library was filled to capacity. Students were everywhere, grabbing slices of pizza, serving themselves salads and sitting around chatting.  Each and every one of these students had one thing in common: They were all being honored for their achievements during the fourth and fifth six weeks.

Wylie East’s luncheon originated whenever the administration started to notice Raider Rallies were no longer possible with our growing high school.

“The auditorium can only hold 1100 students at a time,” Principal Mike Williams said, “we had to discontinue Raider Rallies so we could honor all of the students at once in one location; that location is now the library.”

Students were honored in many ways. Some were honored for their behavior, grades, attendance and even character.

“Teachers nominate students based on their achievements during each six weeks,” Mr. Williams said. “We also have guest speakers to come and talk to our honored students about future goals and good character.”

Mike Rice, the ISS teacher, was the speaker for the recent Raider Rally. He talked about his personal experiences and perseverance.

“If there was one thing I learned in Iraq,” Mr. Rice said, “it’s that you never give up and keep on moving forward; you must move forward.”

Students were really moved by Mr. Rice’s speech.

“I thought that it was neat to hear Mr. Rice tell us about his personal experiences,” Tiffany Ing said. “I liked the luncheon; it was nice just to be honored.”

The honor students had a blast during the luncheon.

“I really liked the pizza and just hanging out with my friends,” Junior Josh Roach said. “It was nice just being in one place with everyone for the same reason.”

Mr. Williams said that honoring the students was an honor itself.

“I love getting to meet the kids around the school and getting to know everyone,” he said, “it really makes my job as a principal worthwhile and it’s the best part of being a principal; I feel like I’m making a difference in each and every students’ lives.”
