Students kick off Cross Town showdown with sumo-wrestling themed games

With their giant bellies skidding across the court, sweat dripping down their face, they listen to the crowd roaring for more. Picking their bloated bodies up, they prepare to fight another round. Welcome to Wylie, where students become sumo-wrestlers for the day to support their schools’ football team.

During the crosstown varsity volleyball game at Wylie High prior to the football game, junior Michael Turner organized a sumo-wrestler themed show to kick off the rivalry at Wylie High School Oct. 2.

Junior Aram Amin joined Turner in battling two other sumo dressed students from Wylie High in barrel racing and racket ball during the second half of the game.

“The crowd thought it was hilarious,” Turner said. “They were very into it and we all worked together to get the crowd involved and even more excited for the football game.”

The court was split by Raider Nation and AHMO pride, while the students’ sumo suits were either blue or maroon to represent their school.

“The event showed all the school spirit we have,” senior Kelly Petterson said. “Going all out and doing the little things like that helps pump up everyone watching the rivalry games.”

Despite the volleyball team’s loss, the collaboration of rivals was able to display The Wylie Way in the school district.
