Pandemic causes game cancellations
*story updated Oct. 8 at 8 a.m.
First it took the homecoming dance away, now it’s scrubbed the homecoming game too.
Due to positive COVID-19 coronavirus tests in the varsity football program, the next two varsity football games are cancelled.
“When I found out, I was hurt, crying about it actually,” varsity football player Tristan Lee said. “The hoco game is really important to me.”
Next week’s varsity game against Longview Pine Tree will not be played as scheduled either. Since both of these next two games are non-district games, they will not be made up.
“The health and safety of our students and staff is the primary focus and the district is following UIL protocols along with state and federal guidelines for [the] coronavirus response,” Director of Communications Ian Halperin said. “The district will notify all affected students and staff and will continue to monitor the situation.”
At this time, the ninth grade and junior varsity games will still be played according to schedule, Thursday, Oct. 8.If Royse City schedules games with another school, these sub-varsity games could be cancelled as well.
*edit: The junior varsity game tonight against Royse City is cancelled.
