Wylie High game culminates with penalty kicks
March 3, 2015
Nearing the end of a cold night, Feb. 25, the boys knew what was going to happen when they played Wylie High.
“I thought the game was going to end with us winning,” Goalie Eno Benjamin (10) said.
In high school soccer there has to be a winner, ties are not acceptable when scoring the points at the end of the season.
“Ending the game in a tie 2-2 was nerve racking because it was going to end in penalty kicks,” Benjamin said.
Varsity’s only freshman was up to block, but missed the shot.
“After that first goal my mind was lost and I knew what the outcome was going to be,” Goalie Skylar Foreman (9) said.
Four shots later, a reacquiring injury to his knee stopped Foreman, and a goalie change had to be made.
“Changing goalies was different, almost scary. I saw the reaction from the Pirates they looked scared because Eno is giant!” Foreman said.
Benjamin stepped into the goalie box with one thing on his mind to block the goal.
“My first shot I was nervous. That week I didn’t have any goalie practice so I didn’t know if I could do it,” Benjamin said.
The kicker stood at the line and shot. Eno dove down saving the ball making the score 6-6.
“Blocking the first ball gave me courage for the second,” Benjamin said.
After saving three of the balls, the final score was 8-7, giving varsity a still undefeated score. After the change, Eno congratulated Forman for playing his hardest even with an injury.
“Being a freshman in a big game like that I knew it would get to him and make him frustrated. I just wanted to go in by stepping in and doing what I could to help the team win,” Benjamin said.
