High school students seriously need a wardrobe reality check. Pants are made to be worn around the waist, shirts were designed to cover the upper body and boots shouldn’t have more hair on them than the head of the person wearing them.
It’s perfectly okay to not have the body of a lingerie model. In fact, it’s more common for people to not look like Victoria’s Secret models. Just because someone wants to look like a model doesn’t mean they get to dress like one.
Walking down the hallway at school, it’s more common to see shirts that are too tight, too low cut or too short than ones that fit properly. People are more likely to see pants about to burst at the seams or halfway to the ground than those worn where they should be.
It’s not that students should wear their pants up at their chests like the oh so fashionable Steve Urkel, but they shouldn’t be on the floor either. Dresses don’t have to totally hide a girl’s body, but they shouldn’t reveal everything she’s got, either. They should fit well enough to show that she’s a woman, but cover enough to show that she’s a lady.
The only way to solve this is for students to realize that the size tag on a pair of pants is just a number and that number shouldn’t define how someone feels about themself. Whether a person is a size zero or size 10, that doesn’t change the fact that everyone has something beautiful about them. Start ignoring the numbers and find the clothes that fit properly and flatter your body.
Students need to take a long look in the mirror when getting dressed and decide if they honestly believe that they look good the way they’re dressed and if the image they project about themselves is the way they want people to view them. Students who are growing up and moving into the real world should dress like the adults they want to be treated as.
