Keeping up with “Scream Queens”: 1st episode review
Questionable start to a questionable series
I scream you scream, we all scream for Scream Queens. You may scream at me as well because, warning: spoiler alerts ahead.
The new series aired Sept 22. It stars various famous figures who decided to give acting another try. Nick Jonas, Ariana Grande, Keke Palmer, Lea Michelle, Skylar Samuels, Diego Boneta and Oliver Hudson make an appearance once again on the silver screen. Was it a wise choice to cast so many well-known actors? Let’s see.
Nick Jonas has taken on the role of a gay golfer who’s still in the closet due to social issues on campus. Boone, his character, seems like he’s a few quarters short of a dollar, but don’t be fooled. He is an evil genius. Some mess happened between Emma Roberts (Chanel) and Glen Powell (Chad, Chanel’s on and off boyfriend) which ended up revealing Nick’s character, Boone’s sexuality to Chanel, and she freaked out in a very unattractive and extremely annoying way because she thought Chad and Boone were together. Honestly I can’t imagine anyone else playing this role. He’s conformed to the character so well I actually believe he’s a gay golfer.
Ariana Grande has been singing her little butt off after the cancelation of Victorious where she played Cat, a “dumb” redhead. Here, not much changes. She is still playing a not-so-smart girl who obviously doesn’t know how to act when there’s an immediate threat, cough cough, killer. Mr. Serial Killer showed up in her room in its fancy devil costume with a knife and she started to flirt with him. It. Whatever it is.
What are you doing?! That’s a murderer in case you didn’t know.
I don’t feel like she’s wrong for the role, because that’s how she’s appeared on screen; a dumb chick. It’s the character that annoys me to no end.
Keke Palmer encompasses her character Zayday perfectly. She’s the definition of sassy. You look up “sassy” on the Internet and there she is, Zayday. Probably the best casting choice for this series. She might literally put the “pow” in powerful.
Lea Michelle was the star of one of my favorite shows “Glee.” There she was an obsessive student who wanted to be just like Barbra Streisand because they shared the same big-nose issues. Here, she’s still obsessive, but in a lunatic sort of way that actually fits her perfectly. To be honest, she’s the psycho Cinderella desperately awaiting her fairy godmother. It’s a good casting choice.
The others such as Skylar Samuels and Oliver Hudson adapted to the show and embodied their characters… in a decent way. Others such as Diego Boneta need to develop their characters more such as in the close up shot which panned from the devil costume to his face. Boneta was supposed to be suspicious but he ended up looking constipated, and in other shots as if he were scared of himself. But I guess that just means Boneta’s character Pete isn’t the killer. Or is he?
The only causes of my eyes being glued to the screen are one, waiting to see what idiotic stunts they will do next, and two, finding out who the killer is. There’s like 1,000 possible people because everyone hates the Kappas. How can I possibly torture my readers with anticipation more than Ryan Murphy tortures me?
Scream Queens makes me want to scream.
