Every human handles tragedies differently, whether personally or collectively involved. Throughout the past week, such unique differences have become clear as the students of Raider Nation remember Nahum Martinez and grieve passing.
Some chose to attend memorial services, and some, to pray alone. Fundraising events have been organized, as well as decidedly more personal family visits. Regardless of the methods, all efforts on the part of the students encourage and comfort his mourning family.
Critics of the remembrances exist, however. A significant number of Raiders have voiced resent for what they consider to be hypocritical supporters–band wagoners who were unaware of indifferent to Nahum’s existence before last weekend’s events.
While such sentiments may be understandable, they are misguided. These critics possess mindsets which are the products of America’s overtly individualistic culture. They fail to understand that while any given student may not have personally known Nahum, his or her expression of support contributes to the cause–not as a personal exhibition of grief, but as a collectivist bond meant to strengthen the Martinez family.
With that in mind, students of all kinds should not be discouraged from participating in memorial events. Their support will be welcomed, and truly, it is needed as a crucial part of the recovery process.
