STUCO hosts annual food drive

From Oct. 26 to Oct. 30, the Student Council (STUCO) collected canned food at the front of the cafeteria before school and during lunch. The food is going towards a local food bank to aid in the coming holiday season. 

Senior STUCO officer Jack Dancy states the difficulty of planning the Canned Food Drive.

“It was difficult to box the cans because there is a specific way to do it; however, I believe it was an amazing experience as it brought many people to come together and donate food for our community,” Dancy said

STUCO hosts the Canned Food Drive every year in order to make sure everyone in the local community  is fed and well cared for. To encourage students to start donating, a student must donate at least five cans to be entered into the raffle; for upperclassmen, the prize is a prom ticket whereas for underclassmen, it’s free Chick-Fil-A. Teachers that gained the greatest number of donations earned an ice cream party for each of their class periods. 

STUCO members such as senior officer Isabel Huckvale appreciate the opportunity to give back to their community.

“The fact that we can get students to contribute to the same cause and help better our community is my favorite part,” Huckvale said.

By implementing the Canned Food Drive every year, the students form a community where each student is able to help others in the city and are able to provide others with the access to food. 

Senior Hermela Assefa describes her goals as an officer of STUCO for the Canned Food Drive.

 “We made a little under 10,000 last year, so we are aiming for the same, if not, more,” Assefa said.

The cans are going towards the Christian Care Center where they are accepting anything that can last in the food center for an extended period of time, as it needs to last through the three major holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In addition, in order to reach at least 10,000 cans, STUCO has implemented a box to store the foods in every single classroom in the school, set up flyers throughout schools and announced the drive on the announcements during second period. 

STUCO sponsor Mrs. Gholson states her favorite part of the process.

“My favorite part of the Canned Food Drive is seeing the giving of what the students were able to do,” Gholson said.

The team wore neon colors that glowed with the lights off. “My favorite part about drill team is the feeling you get when you perform,” junior Camryn Carpenter said. “It is so much fun getting to do what I love in front of people.”

Lights, camera, rapping \ In the middle of one of her scripted raps, sophomore Emily Congemi in the character of Eleanor Skittles performs in the play Cursed and Confused: A Kingdom’s Quest, written by Bella Cavalier. The play follows the journey of a party of misfit adventurers, including Skittles the bard, seeking to remove a curse from their kingdom. “I love the character I got to play, because I like it when you can just kind of go crazy with your character,” Congemi said. “And I got to wear a wig, which was pretty funny.”
