Students intern at Walgreens

With the help from pharmacy technicians, students are gaining the opportunity to have an internship at Walgreens February through April. The class teaches about over the counter drugs, medical terms, how drugs affect the body and how to fill prescriptions.
“I am probably the only person in the whole school who has to study to pass a drug test,” senior Ellie Jurden said.
Pharmacy technician is first and second period every day.
“I have been in the class for 1 1/2 semesters and my hope was to learn about the drugs that will help me with my future career with being a Pharmacologist,” senior Danielle Ory said.
The seven pharmacy tech students are currently training at Walgreens Monday through Wednesday for 2.5 hours totaling 7.5 hours a week.
“Working at the pharmacy is interesting and I will eventually be making $100 a week working eight hours each week,” Jurden said.
The manager at Walgreens has already told Ory to fill out an application so that when she passes her Pharmacy Technician Certification Board test she can be hired right away.
“I get to start my career earlier than others and I feel extremely lucky for that,” Ory said.
Jurden has only been in pharmacy tech her senior year but has taken prerequisites since her freshman year. Her plan was to take an EMT class that the school was supposed to offer. She took pharmacy tech as a last resort and now loves it and even wants to be a pharmacist.
“It’s a great opportunity, definitely take the class if you can,” Jurden said. “It’s a really hard class but it’s worth it and our class is pretty close since there are only seven of us. Plus, Mrs. Sisak is super rad.”
