Spanish Honor Society welcomes new members
March 2, 2017
Forty-three new members were added at the Spanish Honor Society Induction that was held in the auditorium Feb. 23.
The purpose of the society is to recognize high student achievement in Spanish.
“We try to set up meetings and events that let us continue our appreciation and knowledge of the Spanish speaking world,” Spanish Teacher Katharine Isbell said.
To be inducted, a student has to be enrolled in a Spanish Class, enrolled in third semester or higher, be a sophomore or higher, have a 90, 85 for pre AP and AP, in all Spanish classes, and have an overall average of at least 85.
“There’s a lot of hard work put into it,” junior Kate Sheets said. “It’s worth it if you have a love for Spanish like we do.”
Spanish teacher at Burnett Junior High Natalie Palmer was invited as the guest speaker. Palmer spoke on her experiences of learning Spanish and encouraged the students to continue their language studies.
“The Spanish language is beautiful,” Palmer said. “There are so many opportunities in our community to use it.”
Spanish Honor Society will take an eight day language immersion trip to Costa Rica for the summer of 2018.
“Learning a language is a skill and takes practice,” Isbell said, “But the rewards are there if you put in effort.”
