Forty two students recently received their welding certifications in Mr. Tony Roseberry’s classes.

These individuals were also introduced to the construction career path by guest speaker Dean Hamrick, an employee from Fluor Corporation. The 125 year-old company provides work in engineering, construction and maintenance.

For the students interested in this career path, Hamrick stressed the importance of staying drug free without a criminal background to obtain a job. Hamrick also spoke about the importance of this increasingly desired work field during his presentation.

“Since there has been a labor shortage, it is estimated that there will soon be a boom in required workers,” Hamrick said. “We’re going to need 180,000 new employees in the next three years, so we will be very open to providing jobs.”

Students who earned this certification have the option to either go straight into the construction work field after graduating high school, or take their education further through a technical college. It was found that 27 percent of workers with secondary certificates earn more than the average person with a bachelor’s degree.

“I want to go to a two-year technical school to go into combo pipe welding,” senior Jack Wood said. “This career path would be providing me very solid job opportunities since workers are so needed right now.”

With a starting annual salary for those out of high school of about $45,000, this career path provides training for the skills required and several different areas of work. Requirements are to pass a chemical screening, background check, ability to be mobile, be at least 18 years of age and willing to show up for work when needed.

“The information we learned about Fluor gave me more ideas for my future career,” junior Wyatt Aroche said. “Having this certificate will give me more job opportunities and eventually help me get to where I want to be.”

Students who received their certification opened a door to many opportunities in this work field.

“I’m definitely excited for what the future holds,” Wood said. “I’m glad to have heard about this company and what they can offer by being involved in this career.”
